Groundbreaking on Affordable Housing in La Pine

La Pine, OR. Housing Works is excited to announce the start of construction on 42 new affordable townhomes in La Pine. To celebrate that event, Housing Works will be hosting a groundbreaking ceremony for the La Pine Townhomes at 10AM on Tuesday, March 20th, at the building site.

La Pine Townhomes will offer 8 one-bedroom flats, 17 two-bedroom townhomes and 17 three-bedroom townhomes on a 2.7-acre parcel for families at or below 60% area median income (AMI). The community will be the first affordable rental community for low-income families in La Pine. According to 2016 U.S. Census data, 60% of renter households in La Pine are rent burdened, spending more than 30% of their income on housing costs. La Pine Townhomes is a step toward mitigating that issue by providing high-quality homes for 42 families at affordable rents. The La Pine Townhomes site is near schools, parks, Hwy 97 businesses, transportation and social services. The townhomes will be built on a lot donated by Deschutes County, south of Memorial Lane and east of Little Deschutes Lane.

Housing Works’ Executive Director Tom Kemper states, “As rental rates continue to rise and multifamily housing vacancy rates remain incredibly low, Central Oregon’s workforce is struggling to find affordable housing. The construction of these townhomes is a giant step to mitigating that issue for the La Pine community.”

Funding for these desperately-needed townhomes comes from several sources. Oregon Housing and Community Services is providing funding through the LIFT Housing Program, 4% Low Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTC) and Housing Development Grant Program funds. The land for La Pine Townhomes was donated by Deschutes County. Other funders include Washington Federal, PNC Real Estate and Housing Works.

The groundbreaking ceremony will begin at 10 AM near the intersection of Memorial Lane and Little Deschutes Lane in La Pine when public officials, lenders, partners and the community will gather to celebrate this long anticipated construction start. The public is invited to attend.
